Hotel Chains That Allow 18-Year-Olds to Check In

Most hotel chains in the US let you check in at 18, but not every location does. Of the 14,744 US hotels we checked, 90% let guests check in at 18 and 10% require guests to be 21 or older. Among the large chains, Drury (98%), Motel 6 (96%) and Econo Lodge (95%) accept 18-year-olds most often; Homewood Suites (67%), TownePlace Suites (68%) and Hyatt Place (72%) least often. Each hotel sets its own rule, so always confirm the minimum age with the hotel before you book.

What this means if you are 18, 19 or 20

  • No brand guarantees check-in at 18. Most chain hotels are franchised and set their own age policy, so two hotels of the same brand can apply different rules. Even at Drury, check the policy of the exact hotel you book.
  • Turning 19 or 20 rarely changes anything. Only 26 of the 14,744 hotels we checked set the minimum age at 19 or 20. In practice, a hotel either accepts 18-year-olds or requires guests to be 21.
  • Bring a photo ID and a credit card in your name. Most hotels ask for both at check-in, and some take a deposit.
  • If you are under 18, you will usually need an adult to check in and stay with you, whatever the brand.

Cities with the most chain hotels open to 18-year-olds

Number of chain hotels that accept check-in at 18 in each city, with the brands that have the most of them. Each city page lists all the hotels there that accept 18-year-olds, chains and independents.

States where 21+ check-in is more common

All hotels combined, chains and independents, in states with at least 100 hotels checked.

  • Virginia: 19% of the 372 hotels checked require guests to be 21
  • Illinois: 19% of the 217 hotels checked require guests to be 21
  • New Jersey: 17% of the 159 hotels checked require guests to be 21
  • Alabama: 16% of the 111 hotels checked require guests to be 21
  • North Carolina: 15% of the 302 hotels checked require guests to be 21

At the other end, 21+ policies are least common in Hawaii (2%), Alaska (4%), Montana (4%), Idaho (5%) and Nevada (6%).

About these numbers

  • They cover the 14,744 US hotels in our database whose listing states a minimum check-in age, not every location of each chain. 6,632 of them belong to a brand listed here; the others are independent or unbranded.
  • We match each hotel to its brand by its name, for example "Hampton Inn & Suites" to Hampton Inn and Hilton. Hotels whose name does not show their brand are counted as independent.
  • Our database was built to find hotels that accept young guests, so it may include proportionally more of them than a chain's full portfolio. Compare brands with each other rather than reading a percentage as a chain-wide rule.
  • The figures are recalculated from our latest monthly check. See our methodology for how the minimum ages are collected.

Policies can change: confirm the minimum check-in age with the hotel before booking.
